Tournament of Champions: Results!

The tournament ended up being pretty flawlessly run. Most of the games finished before time was called and it was relatively quiet, very nice. We had 3 Guard players, 1 Space Wolves (goats), 1 Black Templars, 1 Tau, and 2 Demons. Though things started out pretty bad for me...

ROUND 1 - Chaos Demons
Pitched Battle
Primary: Annihilation; 3+ kill point difference required for a win
Secondary: Scoring unit in opponents deployment zone at the end of the game
Tertiary: Scoring unit in own deployment zone with no opponent scoring unit there as well
Bonus: All HQs are alive at the end of the game

For round 1, I was paired up against Adam and his Chaos Demons. His army really hasn't changed much since he finished it for the "Paint an army in a month" competition at the end of last year. He had Fateweaver, Great Unclean One, 2 squads of horrors, 2 squads of plaguebearers, 9 flamers, some flesh hounds, a soul grinder, and a Tzeentch prince. More than anything, I knew this game would go to whomever was the luckiest. It was not me...
I thought it might be though... he came in with the wrong half of his army. One squad of horrors, One squad of plaguebearers, Great Unclean One, the demon prince, the flesh hounds, and I think a squad or two of flamers as well. Even before he was on the board, one of my grinders deviated 11 into a forest and immobilized itself... He chose to go second so I had nothing to shoot for a turn. GUO mishapped, but did not die... the hounds mishapped, but did not die... A squad of horrors did 3 wounds to my Bloodthirster with normal shooting...

On my turn, most of my shooting and assault from my LoC and the Tzeentch prince failed to kill the a single squad of horrors. My bloodthirster assaulted his demon prince, did only a single wound and failed his invulnerable for both wounds in return... next turn fateweaver appears and proceeds to boon my Demon Prince away... WTF?!? That was all well and good, the fight was still winable...

Turn 4, he boons the LoC still locked in combat with the horrors and I conceed. He already had 8 kill points to 4 and it was just simply not fun anymore. I'm so happy I stopped using Fateweaver in friendly games, I realize now how bullshit he is. Full points to my opponent.

ROUND 2 - Imperial Guard
Spearhead
Primary: Capture and Control
Secondary: Destroy most expensive fast attack unit
Tertiary: 3 or more scoring units left at the end of the game
Bonus: All your HQs are alive at the end of the game
Bonus: 1 or more heavy support choice alive at the end of the game
Bonus: 1 or more elite choice alice at the end of the game

Round 2 was against bullymike and his guard army. He had a psychic battle squad, a command squad, a ton of veterans in a ton of chimeras, a medusa, a manticore, a demolisher, 2 bane wolves, a valkyrie, some ratlings... I think that's about it. I got the wrong half of my army and Guard did what guard always does, answering every volley with a more direct and devastating volley. My flamers performed pretty well, immobilizing 2 hellhounds and a chimera keeping them away from my objective. I was also able to kill just enough, and push hard with my fatties to keep the majority of his force backed up against it. In the end, he was unable to kill a single remaining plaguebearer that was holding my objective and I was able to pull out a 12-12 draw. Which I was pretty happy with considering it was friggin IG. This picture was after I'd packed up, all the vehicles on my side are destroyed or immobilized.

ROUND 3 - Black Templar
Pitched Battle
Primary: Seize Ground
Secondary: Annihilation; 3+ kill point difference
Tertiary: Heavy Support choice in opponents deployment zone at the end of the game
Bonus: +1 for each of opponents HQ killed
Bonus: 2 or more scoring units across the center line of the table.

Round three was against Jim and his Black Templar. He was the other Templar painter who participated in the "paint an army..." contest. He had 3 squads of shooty terminators, a marshal with a terminator command squad, 2 LRCs, a larger Crusader squad, Emperor's Champion, and a smaller crusader squad. Out of all the armies participating, I was most confident against Jim's. Killing marines is what my army does best

If memory serves, he won the roll and chose to go second. He deployed 2 terminator squads at the front of his line and left everything else in reserve. The correct half of my army arrived and proceeded to wipe one squad out to a single assault cannon as well as kill a single member of the other squad, forcing a Zeal test, which was failed on a 12... the squad then proceeded to run a 12" fall back and ran of the table.
The game didn't get much better for Jim after that point. He was able to alpha strike 2 squads of flamers off the board, but each squad that arrived was quickly annihilated. His best shot was going to be the LRCs, which I would have more trouble dealing with. Unless I can get a lucky bolt of Tzeentch and get one destroyed the turn after it arrived. The second was taken down by a Bloodthirster in close combat as I wiped the marines to the man.
I ended up getting second for the day and finishing second for the year. Goatboy won first for the day and came in right after me for the year. Jwolf was able to hold everyone off to take the winner for the year spot as we'd expected. Bullymike was able to pull out third for the day.
